The Philosophy of Clothing
The relationship between a person's identity
And the clothes they wear is linked,
Entwined around the body like the double helix of a DNA strand.
Clothing protects, comforts, camouflages.
It can be seen as wearable artwork, capable of expressing an artistic vision
with form, style, and symbolism.
The A-line cut, the bias cut. Cotton, tulle, jersey, velvet.
Clothing is important because a choice is being made:
We can express our individuality by the colors we like,
The styles we prefer, the meaning we wish to convey
To others about ourselves.
In order to get hired at a job interview,
You wear clothing which evokes a sense of professionalism
Rather than casual hipness like jeans and a t-shirt.
There is also the choice to stifle ourselves by making an effort to blend in by
Wearing what everyone else is wearing, what is popular and trendy,
To be reassured in our acceptance by society at large
To hide in plain sight, comfortable in our own anonymity.
What fun is that?
