The History Behind Snow boarding
The first variation of the snow board was called a “snurfer” it was introduced in Muskegon, Michigan by Sherman Poppen.
The “Snurfer” was basically a skateboard without wheels that was turned by a string attached to the front. Pictured below is Sherman Poppen with his "snurfer".

The Modern snow board made its first appearance at the first ever “National Snurfing Championship” in 1979. Jake Burton introduced the modern snow board at this competition and the sport of snow boarding began. Since then Burton has become one of the largest snow board company's in the world, developing products for all aspects of the sport.




The first national snow board race was held in 1982 near Woodstock, Vermont at a ski resort named Suicide Six.
Snow boarding was officially declared a sport after the first World Cup was held in Zürs in 1985. The ISA (International Snow board Association) was then founded years later in 1994 ensuring universal contest regulations for all snow boarding competitions.
