In snow boarding there are many different types of snow boards one should consider before getting started.
Alpine Boards
Racing or Alpine boards are Long, narrow, and ridged these types of boards are built for speed
Free ride Boards
Free ride boards are long boards with less flexibility than others, this type of board is used for long fast turns in various different types of snow.
Freestyle Boards
Freestyle boards are shorter in length with a tip on each side, these boards are commonly used for snow board parks and technical tricks, these are the most popular type of snow boards used currently.
Swallow Tail Boards
Swallow Tail boards are wider boards that has a split running down its tail end. The split is there to sink the tail into the snow lower that the front of the board. This type of board is used primarily or deep powdery snow.
Split Tail
Split boards are stable regular boards that can also split into two separate skis, this style is used when hiking in deep back country conditions

Magne-Traction boards have their edges cut in a wavy pattern making it ideal for turning on icy conditions.
