Hiking is an excellent way to exercise while enjoying various terrains and dwelling in nature. There are several local venues including the C&O Canal and the Appalachian Trail.

Bicycling is good aerobic exercise that puts less stress on knees. This can be anything from a leisure ride with friends, to racing, or flying down rocky mountainous trails.  The C&O Canal is a great place to start.

Rafting, kayaking, and canoeing can be a float trip on the Potomac right near Shepherd University, or an exciting trip, plummeting through whitewater rapids—the whole while strengthening the body and increasing heart rate.
