Describe healthful benefits resulting
from regular participation in physical activity.
Introduction: As
a physical education teacher, our main goal is to convince all of our students
that regular physical activity is very important. The following WebQuest is for all physical education teachers to follow
in order to describe all of the healthful benefits from regularly participating
in physical activity.
Task: My target age group
for this would be high school students due to the amount of comprehension that
is required. Also, it is our goal to have our students
brain storm to develop their own ways in order to become more physically
active. High school students should have a desire to be healthy already which
will help them actually want to learn. This lesson could be used for either
health education or physical education.
The only components that the students
should have prior to the lesson would be the absolute basics regarding health.
The students should have received enough information regarding these basics in
elementary school, middle school, and even early in high school.

Process: The
teacher should prepare a handout to be given to the students which cover all of
the ideas below. This will allow the student to go home and study what is
written down for them and to be able to reiterate the information on a test.
However, during class instructional time, the teacher should introduce all of
the material to the student and explain each individually.
It will take about three class periods
to effectively cover all of the information. So it would be wise to plan it out
depending on your teaching style. The students will be in more of a lecture
style for the first two days. Then, on the third day allow the students to meet
together in groups to come up with some additional ways to become more
physically active and research the ways that it will be beneficial to their
health.
·
Exercise improves your mood.
A simple workout at
the gym or a short 30-minute walk can help you calm down from a stressful day.
Exercise stimulates
various brain chemicals, which may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed
than you were before you worked out. You'll also look better and feel better
when you exercise regularly, which can boost your confidence and improve your
self-esteem. Exercise even reduces feelings of depression and anxiety.
·
Exercise combats chronic diseases.
Regular exercise can
even be your biggest help in preventing heart disease or osteoporosis.
Regular exercise can also
help you prevent or at the very least manage high blood pressure. Your
cholesterol will also benefit. Regular exercise can help you prevent type 2
diabetes, osteoporosis, and certain types of cancer.
·
Exercise helps you manage your weight.
One of the best ways
to manage your weight is to trade some couch time for walking or other physical
activities.
When you exercise,
you burn calories. The more intensely you exercise the more calories you burn and
the easier it is to keep your weight under control. You do not even need to sacrifice
major amounts of time for working out. Doing simple activities like take the stairs
instead of the elevator, going for a walk during your lunch break, or doing
jumping jacks during commercials is an easy way to manage your weight more
effectively. Even better, turn off the television and take a walk. Dedicated
workouts are great, but activity you accumulate throughout the day also helps
you burn calories.
·
Exercise strengthens your heart and lungs.
Regular exercise can
leave you breathing easier.
Exercise delivers
oxygen and nutrients to your tissues. In fact, regular exercise helps your
entire cardiovascular system work more efficiently. When your heart and lungs
work more efficiently, you'll have more energy to do the things you enjoy.
·
Exercise promotes better sleep.
Exercise has the
capability of helping you fall asleep and stay asleep. It might help to boost
your physical activity during the day.
A good night's sleep
can improve your concentration, productivity and mood. Exercise is sometimes
the key to better sleep. Regular exercise can help you fall asleep faster and
deepen your sleep. The timing of your exercise routine is completely up to you,
but if you are having trouble sleeping, you might want to try late afternoon workouts..
·
Exercise can be fun!
Get physical!
Exercise doesn't have
to be torture. Take a ballroom dancing class, check out a local climbing wall
or hiking trail, take a trip to the local city park, or join a competitive
community team sport. Find an activity you enjoy, and go for it. If you get
bored, try something new. If you're moving, it counts!
Assessment/Evaluation: The
teacher should organize a checklist based on a point system so each student can
tally up his point to see how well he did during each week. The checklist
should include various topics on being physically active and healthy. Also with
the assignment there should be a short questionnaire in order to assess the
amount of knowledge that each student has gained from the lesson.
