Fitness and Recreational Sites

Introduction: Students will find recreational and fitness sites outside of their school.

Lesson: Students will find through websites five different recreational or fitness sites within a fifty mile radius of their school, and write a page summary on each. Students will print off web pages from sites and attach to page summaries.

Curriculum Standards: This lesson will use West Virginia High School Physical Education Standard 3:03. Students will exhibit a physically active lifestyle that provides the opportunity for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction. Identify and describe local, state, national, and/or international fitness and recreational resources and organizations.

Task: Lesson is designed for high school level students, grades 9-12. Lesson involves students relating physical education with computer science and computer technology aspects. Lesson can also be adapted for middle school students, grades 6-8.

Prior Knowledge: Students will need the prior knowledge of computer use, using Microsoft Word to type up the summaries as well as a basic knowledge of internet searching.

Resources: Students will need the use of a computer with internet access for research.

Process: The lesson is described to student’s as an out of class assignment to be done on their own. Since the activity is a small one the student’s should be able to complete it within a week. One week should be sufficient enough time for the student to complete the assignment. Students will be using either a school computer lab or home computer.
