West Virginia
Welcome to Wild and Wonderful West Virginia. Thank goodness it's no longer "West Virginia Open for Business." If you take this journey you will drive right through my hometown which has a lot to offer historically. My home town is Romney and it changed hands 52 times during the Civil War. A friend of mine even lives in a house once occupied by General Stonewall Jackson. Take a ride on the Potomac Eagle just two miles off Route 50. This scenic train ride will give you the opportunity to see some Bald Eagles and the Potomac River. It's a cheap and easy way to have a little fun.
Another place I would recommend you to see is Ice Mountain/Nature Conservancy Preserve, "Nature's Icebox", where ice naturally remains most of the year in crevices. The supply of ice was used for 200 years by native Americans and early inhabitants of nearby villages to store food. The temperatures are low enough to affect the nearby vegetation. The cold temperatures encourage the growth of plant species normally found only at elevations of 3000 - 4000 feet above sea level and as far north as Quebec and the Yukon.
