Dr. Baker returned to literary studies after a brief stint as an accountant demonstrated the futility of any other career path.  She recently completed her dissertation—Blaming Helen:  Beauty and Desire in Contemporary Literature.  The manuscript represents her ongoing effort to reclaim the language of the aesthetic as a viable literary theory by surveying the attitudes toward beauty displayed by postmodern authors including Yannis Ritsos, Christa Wolf, and Derek Walcott.  In addition to aesthetic philosophy, Dr. Baker’s continuing research interests include the structural poetics of Derek Walcott and the tension between masculine and feminine imagery in underworld journeys.
