Curiosity Brings New Hope Into Life On Mars Debate

This week the Mars rover Curiosity has sent back more footage from the Red Planet’s surface. NASA scientists say that the rover has not yet detected any traces of methane gas. Methane gas on Earth is mainly produced by organic materials decomposing; therefore, if methane were detected on Mars it would be a slam dunk in the “evidence of life on Mars” department. Do not get discouraged just yet. Orbiting probes and Earth based telescopes have detected methane in the Martian atmosphere so it is possible that the rover is just not in the right area.
