“Physical Activity
Beyond the Classroom”
Lesson Overview:
The focus of my lesson is to provide learning opportunities
about sports/activities outside of the classroom that involve adequate physical
activity. I am preparing a worksheet for the students to access through my Web
Quest. I will be accessing the student’s ability to research information on the
Internet, analyze the information that I provide for them, perform research of
their own, and record their answers to the provided questions on the answer
sheet. The students are required to analyze and research 10 different sports,
and discuss the degrees of physical activity that each sport involves. I will
provide five (5) sports to research, and ask them to research five (5)
different sports of their choosing. The students will be required to research
these sports online and provide at least one (1) resource for each sport
supporting their answers. I will also ask the students to address the amount of
cardiovascular fitness, and muscular fitness needed in each sport.

The
TASK:
This lesson is to be
focused mainly on the students at the high school level. This lesson could be
used for students as low as 6th-8th grade but its main
objective is to address high school Physical Education and Health Education
students.
Prior to the lesson, I
am assuming the students know how to use a computer, along with accessing the
Internet. The students will already have a basic knowledge of the sports that I
require (football, soccer, golf, basketball, baseball). I am also assuming that
the students will have a general knowledge of five (5) other sports in which
they are required to research.

Process (as described on Student Page):
Imagine that you are currently an Athletic
Trainer for the big time University within your town. You have been approached
by 10 parents of students at the local middle and high school. They are
interested in information regarding all the benefits that can be provided by
various out-of-school sports. You are in charge of making sure these parents
get the answers or your job will be in jeopardy. The first 5 parents have
provided you with specific sports that they want answers about, and asked for
an explanation as to why they are beneficial sports. The other 5 parents want
you to recommend a good sport, explain why you chose that sport, and the
benefits that sport can offer their child. Your job is to do some online
research in order to give the parents an educated response. The first 5 sports
have been provided and you are required to have research done on these sports
(no exceptions!). You are responsible for researching 5 different sports (of
your choice) and providing the corresponding website where you received your
information. Type at least 1 paragraph (8-10 sentences) addressing the amount
of cardiovascular fitness needed to perform in that sport, and also, if there
is significant muscular fitness needed as well.
This specific lesson involves only one (1)
class period to hand out and discuss the assignment. The assignment itself will
be given a longer timeline before needing to be turned in (2 weeks from date of
distribution). The assignment can be done on a home based computer or any
school computer with approval by an administrator. Computer must have Internet
access in order to complete the tasks.
Assessment/Evaluation:
My evaluation for this assignment will be
based on the student’s research abilities, their ability to analyze the
information, and their ability to connect the information to the health
component within. Grading will be based on a scale, with 5 being the highest
possible number of points given in each of the 4 sections (website used,
written paragraph, synthesis of information from website,
grammar/organization). The evaluation chart will be as follows:
