Punch Down

All of the cables had to be punched down in the connectors in the room and the same had to be done to the end of the cable that was in the rack. This was first done by stripping the PVC cover off of the wire. About 8" was removed. There was plastic around the three cables with three pieces of fiber used to hold the wire together. After all of this was removed you had three pieces of cables that could now be worked with. The ends of all the cables were then stripped back about 1" to 2". This allows us to punch down the wire in to the connectors. There were two different types of connectors used in the wall boxes, two data connections that were RJ 45 connectors and one phone (RJ 11) connector.

This is what the punch down of the data (RJ45) connectors looked like:

Punch down of the phone (RJ11) connector:

The phone did not need the punch tool when you install the cap; it pushes down on the wires to make a firm connection.

These are the connectors and the tools that were used in the punch downs:

The Main tools are shown below:

From right cutting pliers, 110 punch tool, tool used to take the twist out of the wire and split the pairs. The tool on the left was used to remove the outer shielding around the twisted pair wire.
