The management software on the switch will let the port be disable and
locked down. What is the management
software it allows you to change and monitor the way the switch is working. This
software is not required to get the switch working, but it does improve the
efficiency of the switch and therefore improve the overall performance of your
network. The switches are able to detect if there are multi computer on one
connection. If someone try to plug
in to the port that did not register for the port the connection become unable
to use. The switches keep track of
the MAC address of each network card. When
a different MAC address in sent back to the switch that someone registered for
it will disable the port.
All of the port will be turned on for a time about three to four weeks in
to the start of the semester. This will allow the student to use the connection
and try it out. After the time the
port will then be turned off. All
of the port that have not been registered for will be turned off to register you
will have to do an online registration for your port. This will stop the use of
the port that has not been paid for. The
switch as the ability to learn the address of the first packet it receives on
the port this allow the port to be locked down to the one user. No other address can be learned until security is disabled or
the address is manually removed form the database.
The address cannot be learned on another port until security is disable
or the address is manually removed from the database.
