FAST FOOD   CRIME BUSTER

Introduction: Ryan is an 8 year old little boy who is obsessed with fast food.  However, Ryan's doctor wants him to limit his calories to 700 per meal.  Your mission is to compare Ryan's three favorite fast food restaurants and see if they meet his doctor's request.

The Task: Each of you will look up the total number of calories in Ryan's favorite meal at McDonald's, Burger King, and Chick-fil-A and create a pie graph to compare the three.

The Process:  You will work in groups of two to complete this web quest.  Each group will need to visit McDonald's, Burger King, and Chick-fil-A’s website to add the number of calories in Ryan's favorite meal.  Click on the link below to visit each site.

McDonalds:    Ryan’s menu:  Premium Crispy Chicken Classic Sandwich, large French Fries, and a large Coca-Cola classic

Burger King:    Ryan’s menu:  Tender Crisp Chicken Sandwich, large French Fries, and a large Coca-Cola

Home Page   Ryan’s menu:  Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich (wheat bun), large Chick-fil-A Waffle Potato Fries, and a large Coca-Cola Classic

Create A Graph

Review these directions for creating your graph before you access the website. You will have to enter information into five sections to create your pie graph.  In the 1st section you will click on pie graph.  Next, you will click on the data tab and enter in a graph title, set the data to three pie slices, enter item labels (McDonald’s), and Values (total # calories).  Label, the next section is optional if you have time to be creative with your font size and color.  Lastly, you will click on the preview tab to review your graph.  If everything looks great print your graph to turn in for a grade.

Optional Activity: If you have time you can create a new pie graph comparing a healthier food choice from one of Ryan’s favorite restaurants with two not so healthy choices.  Hint:  The healthier choice should contain fewer calories and therefore, less space on your pie graph.

Evaluation:  Each student needs to make a pie graph to stand for Ryan’s total number of calories at each of his three favorite fast food restaurants.  If his menu fails to meet his doctor’s request at all three restaurants choose one restaurant and create a meal that would meet his doctor’s request.

Conclusion: This web quest provides for an interactive, exploratory learning experience while teaching the importance of nutrition and healthy eating.  Hopefully, the students will think it is fun and therefore look forward to working on the modules and completing the assignments.
