Course Description

An integration of the material covered in previous programming and systems courses. An examination of modern management information systems in a business setting. Topics include structured decision systems, decision support systems, information systems acquisition and management, database management systems, and the role of information processing systems in business decisions.

Class Coverage

This class takes about fundamental concepts of management information systems. The following subjects will be covered.

·                Introduction to Information Systems.

·                Information System in the Enterprise

·                Using IS in E-Commerce.

·                System Users and Developers.

·                Computing and Communication Resources.

·                DBMS Fundamentals.

·                System Development.

·                Information System Security.

·                DSS: Decision Support System.

·                Networking and Wireless Networking

Homework Assignments and Exams

Homework assignments provide chances to practice and review concepts discussed in class. Be sure to do the assignments in order to get yourself ready for exams.

There will be 1 midterm, 1 final exam, a number of project assignments (including Lab projects) and quizzes. The exams include material covered in the classroom and labs.

Weight: Midterm 30%, Final 30%, Coursework (Project Assignments, Weblog Posts, In Classroom Discussion, Term Paper etc) 40%.

Final Exam Time: 5:30pm ~ 7:00pm, Thursday, May 8, 2008.

Late policy: Assignments turned in late may suffer a late penalty (up to 10% per day). But it is always better to turn them in late rather than never at all.

Grading Scale: 100 - 90 A, 89 - 80 B, 79 - 70 C, 69 - 60 D, 59 - 0 F. For borderline cases, other things will be taken into consideration such as class participation and the final exam.

Team Project Assignments

CIS 418 Students:

CIS students will form teams to complete a semester long team project. Each team will have 2 or 3 students. In this team project each team will be a Web store with essential E-Commerce components, including but not limited to the following features:

 

·        shopping cart,

·        inventory management and fulfillment processing, s

·        shipment and tracking,

·        customer management,

·        payment processing,

·        customer service.

We recommend you to use oscommerce (from http://www.oscommerce.com) as the platform to build your Ecommerce Web site but you are free to choose any platform that you prefer.

Each team will report your progress report during the semester and demonstrate your final product in the end of semester.

MBA 582 Students:

MBA students will form teams to work on a term paper to talk about a variety of MIS related topics from business perspective.

Details on team project assignments will be posted on the class Web site no later than the third week.

Distance Learning and Weblog

Since this is a once-a-week class, we don’t usually cancel classes. During snow days or other emergency so that the class cannot meet in the classroom, online sessions will be observed using WebLog and WebCT.

 

Weblog and WebCT will also be used for online discussion.

Attendance

You are expected to attend class and to arrive on time. Class attendance is important since some material will be covered that is not in the textbook. Should you miss class, you are responsible for completing any missed work before the next class. This is important since class exercises will often build on each other. Extra credits (up to 5 points) may be given to good attendance and active participation.

Comments

Any work except team assignments that you do for this class is to be on your own. Any violation means that the work will not be accepted and further action will be taken. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.

 

It is up to the student to make up any missed material.  Make-ups will only be given in the case of an excused absence or a documented, valid emergency.  I encourage you to contact me if an emergency arises. You must contact me to schedule a make up exam before the next regularly scheduled class meeting following the missed exam. I reserve the right to give a different exam for makeup than the one administered to the class.
