Bluefish- Pomatomus saltator

The bluefish occurs in high-energy coastal waters in all warm subtropical seas. They have an average maximum size of 60cm, but occasionally grow up to 100cm. The mouth extends behind the eye. The second dorsal fin is longer than the first dorsal fin and they have two spines before the anal fin.

They are ferocious predators and will often attack fish their size. They destroy prey numbers far in excess of their feeding requirements. A hunting school will often leave a trail of blood and maimed fish behind it. They migrate to warmer water during the winter and to cooler water in the summer.

They serve an economic importance to commercial fisheries and aquaculture and are fished by game-fisherman.
