The son of Erebus and Nyx. Charon is depicted as a sulky old man, or as a winged demon carrying a double hammer. He is the ferryman of Hades who carries the souls of the newly deceased across the River Styx (divides the world of the living from the world of the dead). A coin is paid to Charon for passage, which is usually placed in the mouth of a dead person. Also, Charon only accepts the dead who are buried or burned with the proper rites (if not, the souls wonder the banks of Styx forever).
