Introduction

Timmy has been your best friend since kindergarten and has recently started hanging out with known drug users. Yesterday he hinted that he was considering trying drugs. You are the only person that he has told about his possible drug use. You decide it would be a good idea to tell the teacher someone has confided in you that they are thinking about trying drugs with their friends. Ask her to help you convince the student drugs are bad by getting the students involved in learning the effects of drugs on your body and by teaching assertive ways of saying no. Remember it is up to you and your classmates to convince Timmy that drugs are bad.

The Task

Convince Timmy why he should not do drugs by gathering all the information you can find about the effects of dangerous drugs on your body.

Remember you want to fill this book with as many reasons as you can find to convince your friend not to do drugs.

Congratulations! You have just given your friend a lot of information about why he should not do drugs, now you need to teach him ways assertive ways of saying no.

Resources

The Process

  1. Teacher will assign students in small groups of two or three.

  2. Teacher will assign each group a name of a drug and they will gather information on how that drug effects your body. ( we will focus on; heroine, cocaine, crack, marijuana, and meth.)

  3. Once information has been gathered the class will work together to create an illustrative page or pages that list the effects of their drug and a catchy phrase or statement that goes with their illustration.
  4. Once each group has constructed their page or pages and the class has constructed their page or pages, the class will get together and create the front and back covers of their book and select an appropriate title.
  5. Once the students have completed they will give it to the teacher to laminate and bind together.
  6. Now everybody gather together and read your book. Let each group  read and explain their pages. then have an open discussion about the information that you have just learned.

Task 2:

  1. Assign students to groups of three or four.
  2. Your teacher will make up index cards with different situations that students might face in which they will have to say no to drugs.
  3. Each group will be given a card and told to make up a short skit or play showing the situation and a solution to the problem.
  4. Next you will be allowed to practice your skit or play in your own space in the room. Shh! Be very quiet, you don't want everyone to see and hear your play until it is performed.
  5. Lights! Camera! Action! Break a leg!  This is your last chance to convince Timmy that he can do the right thing and tell those people NO!! Act out your skit.
  6. Teacher have students discuss all of the award winning performances and give their opinions of how they might solves these problems. The more ideas Timmy gets the more likely he is to say no.

Conclusion

Dear Friend,

I am so thankful that I have such a caring friend. You and all of my classmates have convinced me that drugs are harmful to both your mind and body. There is no way I will ever do any type of drugs. I told my so called new friends that they were stupid thugs for doing drugs and to take a hike! I learned how to do that by watching all of those cool skits in class. Thanks again!!!

                                                                                                            Your Bestest buddy,

                                                                                                               Timmy

Congratulations! You did it! You saved your friend from a terrible life, full of poor health, social problems, and possibly from a life in prison. Not only are you great friends but you are very educated about how and why to say no to drugs.
