Introduction

Hey kids! My buddy Jethro has been feeling tired and run down after his long day at school. He's so tired he can't even play with his dog, Rex, when he gets home. Jethro also gets stomach aches that keep him from playing with his friends.

His mom took him to the Doctor and Doc gave him some tests. The Doc said Jethro is fine! But Jethro still feels tired faster than the other kids in class.

The Doctor says it might be the things Jethro eats during the day, so Jethro's Mom had him list the things he eats during the day.

Here is what Jethro eats:

Breakfast - Two Doughnuts and an orange soda

Lunch - Two slices of pizza, a root beer soda, and a candy bar.

After School Snack - Potato Chips and an orange soda.

Dinner - A Cheeseburger, French fries and a grape soda.

Task

Kids, we need to find the problem with what Jethro eats!

We can help him eat better so he can play with his friends at school and with his dog when he gets home.

We will form six groups the Milk Group, the Meat Group, the Vegetable Group, the Fruit Group, the Grain Group, and the Fats and Oils or "Other" Group.

Once you have researched the different kinds of foods that are in your group and what you need from your group to stay healthy, you will pick a list of foods from your group that you want to include in Jethro's diet.  Once you have all completed your research you will create 3 meals - breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and a snack, for Jethro.

Keep in mind that it is ok to have some foods that are not very healthy, but how much of each thing is what is important.  Your grade for this assignment will be based on how correct your food choices are and on how well your group worked together.

Process

1.  Divide the class into groups of 6.

2.  One person in each group will choose the food group in which they want to be the expert.

3.  Using the resources provided in the WebQuest each member will research his or her food group.  You must learn what foods belong to your food group and how much of each should be included for Jethro to eat each day.

4.  Each group of six will now discuss what they discovered about their food group and why they chose the foods on their lists.

5.  Now the different foods must be put into the 3 meals and the 2 snacks for Jethro.  Each member of the group will pass in their own copy of Jethro's daily food plan. Every student will include either a plus (+) or a minus (-) sign, next to each group members' name.  Put a plus sign if that member of your group did their part and helped the group, put a minus sign if you felt that some one in the group did not complete their tasks for the group

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated on the whether or not the food choices they made prove that they did research on the subject.  Information regarding types and servings of different foods and food groups must be accurate.  The plus or minus given to each student by their other group members will also factor into individual final grades.
