Essay 3

In T.S. Eliot’s poem, “The Waste Land,” the world is disordered. Lil, after all, has rotten teeth and has had a series of miscarriages. Even though the landscape seems rather barren, the picture may not be entirely pessimistic. In this essay, agree or disagree with the following:

Virginia Woolf (or Franz Kafka) believes there is no hope for society; society is spiraling downward toward inevitable doom.

In order to keep your essay focused, respond to the prompt using either Woolf or Kafka, not both. Make sure to focus your attention on analyzing your position, using appropriate textual support. Do not summarize.

In addition to pertinent quotes from the primary text, use support from two critical articles. The critical articles should come from one of three data bases: MLA, Project Muse, or JSTOR.

Your five page essay is due Friday, May 1, 2009.

Attach copies of the two critical articles you use, and cite according to the MLA Style Guide—you can pick up a quick-and-easy MLA style sheet from the Academic Assistance Center.
