The Three Groups of Ghosts
Ghosts that Interact
with the Living
A ghost is something that survives death. According to Auerbach, a person’s personality or soul
is what survives death, and that personality is able to
interact with the living and other ghosts.
Ghosts that interact with the living can communicate
in several ways. They could speak with the witness or they
may write on paper, walls, or furniture. The ghost may throw
objects or move objects. It could also communicate in some
fashion to other ghosts. The ghost may make a body gesture
or movement to signal something to the viewer.
Ghosts that Do Not
Interact with the Living
Ghosts that do not interact with the living are the most
common type of ghosts. Since the ghosts can not interact
with objects, it becomes clear that the personality or soul
did not survive death. The causes of these hauntings come
from environmental recording or imprinting.
Southall describes imprinting as an act that has been
performed repeatedly in life that has left a psychic
impression on the environment. This imprint in the
environment remains after the person or object has died. The
imprints can fade over time and this creates the
disappearance of the haunting. The imprints can reappear or
be strengthened when a person enters the area
that has a similar aura to the person that created the
imprint. This person may seem possessed by the haunting or
physically drained because of the imprints affects.
Ghosts that are
Typically a Living Person
Certain objects that are considered ghosts are actually
created by a living person.
Poltergeists are the most
common of this type. Others include, but are not limited to,
crisis apparitions and
out of body experiences.
