Some Superstitions:

Barren Ground

Barren Ground is considered to be created by a curse or the shedding of innocent blood or some other crime. It is considered the devil’s work because nothing can grow there. Sometimes a patch of barren ground has been found in the shape of a cross to mark an innocent victims grave.

Bells

The sound of church bells used to be considered to drive away demons. This theory was also used even before Christianity was invented. Church bells were also sounded during storms to prevent property damage. During epidemics of disease, church bells were rung to “clear the air” of whatever caused the sickness. Bells are also said to ring on there own when a crime is committed near them or a saint was near. If a person steals church bells, misfortune will become of them.

Burial Preparations

Most people consider it to be a bad omen if the eyes of a corpse are open when it is being prepared for burial. A corpse that is still “limber” or that has not stiffened as quickly as a normal corpse signifies another death in the house. In some places it was considered customary to tie the feet to prevent the spirit from returning.

Clover

Clover was a plant that protected humans from witch’s spells and fairies enchantments. It brought good luck to those who kept in their homes. If a person dreamt of clover, it meant that they would have a happy marriage. Finding a four-leaf clover gave the holder the power to see fairies and recognize evil beings.
