Description  A course designed to help students sharpen their oral and writing skills through the use of guided conversation and composition. Topics for discussion include the family and cultural differences. Prerequisite: SPAN 204 or permission of the coordinator.   

 

Goals: This course is based in part on the following National Standards for Foreign Language Learning: (Copyright ACTFL) 


Standard 1.1    Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express

                        feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
Standard 1.2    Students understand and interpret spoken and written Spanish on a variety

of topics.

Standard 1.3    Students present information, concepts, and ideas in Spanish to an

                        audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.
Standard 2.1    Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the

                        practices and the Perspectives of Hispanic cultures.
Standard 2.2    Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the

                        products and perspectives of Hispanic cultures.
Standard 3.1    Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines

                        through Spanish.
Standard 3.2    Students acquire intonation and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that

                        are only available through the Spanish language and its cultures.
Standard 4.1    Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through

                        comparisons between Spanish and English.
Standard 4.2    Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through

                        comparisons between Hispanic cultures and their own.
Standard 5.1    Students use Spanish both within and beyond the school setting
Standard 5.2    Students show evidence of becoming life-long learners by using Spanish

                        for personal enjoyment and enrichment.

Notas:             Your final grade in this course will be based on the following criteria:

 

                        30% Midterm and Final

                        30% written assignments (films, compositions)

                        30% Participation in class, conversation

                        10% Presentations

Expectativas: Students will be expected to know and to demonstrate in Spanish how to do the following:

  • Understanding of SER/ESTAR in context

  • Subjunctive y Conditional in context
  • Culture and Civilization of Latin America and Spain in context
  • Understand local politics, religion, social relations
  • Cultural aspects of Spain and Latin America through literature and film
  • Participation in multilingual communities at home through direct use of the language
  • Demonstrate connections between their native language and Spanish and they will be able to compare their culture with the Spanish and Latin American cultures

 

 

 

Conducta:        The following are not allowed and will not be tolerated:

                                    Excessive talking

                                    Cell phones

                                    Chronic tardiness

                                    Smoking or chewing tobacco

                                    Academic dishonesty

 


Attendance:    Successful progress in a language course requires that students keep up with assigned material and attend class regularly. 

 In Spanish 301 you are permitted two absences, excused or unexcused.  For each absence beyond two, two points will be deducted from the final grade point average.  You are expected to be punctual and three tardys (or early departures) count as one absence.  If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out specific assignments from fellow classmates and return prepared to class.
