Descripción:    An introduction to the study of literary movements from the Middle Ages to the Golden Age highlighting major representative works. Prerequisite: SPAN 301/302 or permission of the instructor.

 

Objetivos:  We will work exclusively in Spanish in order not only to gain a thorough understanding of Peninsular literature but also to perfect the students writing, reading and oral language skills.  We will pay close attention to grammar structures, spelling and style.  We will use the MLA manual as our bibliographical standard.

Videos:            Los estudiantes verán dos películas en clase basadas en una novela o cuento.  Tendrán que escribir un trabajo de dos hojas sobre las diferencias entre las dos versiones.

 

Teatro:            Intentaremos ir a Virginia al Teatro de la Luna para ver una obra.  Las entradas costarán $15 por persona.

 

Trabajos

escritos:          Los estudiantes en esta clase deberán escoger un libro de la lista del profesor y escribir un trabajo de 7 páginas utilizando por lo menos tres fuentes de crítica en español o inglés para justificar sus opiniones.  Tienen que utilizar el manual del  MLA para la bibliografía final.  Este projecto será presentado en clase al final del semestre en una ponencia de 15 minutos como mínimo.  Podrán leer su trabajo o simplemente hablar libremente sobre el proceso de investigación.  ¡Ojo con el plagio!  Uds. Tendrán tiempo de sobra para consultar con el profesor al respecto de sus problemas o dudas.

 

Notas:             Your final grade in this course will be based on the following criteria:

 

                        30% Midterm and Final

                        15% book Paper

                        20% written assignments (films, theatre)

                        15% Presentation on the book paper

                        20% Participation in class, conversation and homework

Expectativas: Students will be expected to know and to demonstrate in Spanish how to do the following:

 

  • In depth knowledge of literary currents in Spain from the middle ages to the Golden age
  • Participation in class discussions and debates on literary aspects
  • Advanced essay writing on the period’s literary master works
  • Understanding of Spain’s socio-political history of the period
  • Interact with others to provide and obtain information on this topic
  • Understanding rapid Spanish speech patterns specific to literature
  • Have a good command of advanced grammar patterns
  • Culture and Civilization of Spain in context
  • Understand the period’s politics, religion, social relations
  • Cultural aspects of  Spain through representative literature and film
  • Participation in multilingual communities at home through direct use of the language
  • Demonstrate connections between their native language and Spanish and they will be able to compare their culture with the Spanish and Latin American cultures

 

 

Conducta:        The following are not allowed and will not be tolerated:

                                    Excessive talking

                                    Cell phones

                                    Chronic tardiness

                                    Smoking or chewing tobacco

                                    Academic dishonesty

 

 

Attendance:    Successful progress in a language course requires that students keep up with assigned    material and attend class regularly.  In Spanish 310 you are permitted two absences, excused or unexcused.  For each absence beyond two, two points will be deducted from the final grade point average.  You are expected to be punctual and three tardys (or early departures) count as one absence.  If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out specific assignments from fellow classmates and return prepared to class.
