DescriptionSPAN 404 Spanish Linguistics

COURSE DESCRIPTION


        This course provides an in-depth examination of Spanish Linguistics as applied to the Spanish language with a concentration in phonics, morphology, syntaxes, and semantics. SPAN 301/302 or permission of the instructor.

 

Goals: This course is based in part on the following National Standards for Foreign Language Learning: (Copyright ACTFL)

 
Standard 1.1 Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions and exchange opinions.
Standard 1.2 Students understand and interpret spoken and written Spanish on a variety of topics.
Standard 1.3 Students present information, concepts, and ideas in Spanish to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.
Standard 4.1    Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons between Spanish and English.
 Standard 5.1    Students use Spanish both within and beyond the school setting
 

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
1.  Describe the variations or dialectic variants in Hispanic America, and Spain.
2.  Explain the rules for phonetic variation in Spanish and apply them in their speech.
3.  Discuss sociolinguistic issues in the U.S. and around the Hispanic world.
4.  Apply knowledge in a field project.
5.  Summarize current research in the field
6.  Utilize tools for the teaching of Spanish pronunciation.

OBJETIVOS DEL CURSO:
1. Estudio de los universales lingüísticos y su aplicación a la lengua española.
2. Introducción a la lingüística descriptiva y sincrónica.
3. Introducción a las diferentes ramas de la lingüística: fonética, fonología, morfología,
    sintaxis, semántica y pragmática.
4. Aplicación práctica de la teoría lingüística para mejorar la pronunciación, aumentar el
    léxico y afianzar la sintaxis del español.
5. Análisis de las diferentes hablas y variantes del español de España e Hispanoamérica.
    Análisis del español hablado en los Estados Unidos.
6. Ayudar a los profesores de español en la enseñanza de la pronunciación.

 

 

Notas:             Your final grade in this course will be based on the following criteria:

 

                        30% Midterm and Final

                        30% written assignments (films, compositions)

                        30% Participation in class, conversation

                        10% Presentations

Attendance:    Successful progress in a language course requires that students keep up with assigned material and attend class regularly.  In Spanish 404 you are permitted two absences, excused or unexcused.  For each absence beyond two, two points will be deducted from the final grade point average.  You are expected to be punctual and three tardys
(or early departures) count as one absence.  If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out specific assignments from fellow classmates and return prepared to class.
