Description:  SPAN 419 FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING METHODS (3)/
A course designed to acquaint students with the theories of language acquisition; prepare the students to teach language in context and use computer aided language teaching methods.  Students will develop lesson plans, teaching portfolios and they will get practical experience teaching Spanish at the 102 level.  This class meets once a week but the students are expected to stay in constant communication with the instructor through Web CT.  Students should be able to pass the corresponding Praxis II test at the conclusion of the course.  Permission of the coordinator. 

Goals: This course is based in part on the following National Standards for Foreign Language Learning:
Standard 1.1    Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
Standard 1.2    Students understand and interpret spoken and written Spanish on a variety of topics.
Standard 1.3    Students present information, concepts, and ideas in Spanish to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics.
Standard 2.1    Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and the Perspectives of Hispanic cultures.
Standard 2.2    Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of Hispanic cultures.
Standard 3.1    Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through Spanish.
Standard 3.2    Students acquire intonation and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the Spanish language and its cultures.
Standard 4.1    Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons between Spanish and English.
Standard 4.2    Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons between Hispanic cultures and their own.
Standard 5.1    Students use Spanish both within and beyond the school setting
Standard 5.2    Students show evidence of becoming life-long learners by using Spanish for personal enjoyment and enrichment.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:


 By the end of this course, students will be able to:
 1. Prepare and teach an elementary Spanish class
 2. Discuss topics related to language acquisition theories
 3. Use technology and computer aided language methods                                                    

4. Take the corresponding Praxis II test

 

 

Notas:             Your final grade in this course will be based on the following criteria:

 

                        30% Midterm and Final

                        30% Teaching Practicum

                        25% Participation/attendance/assignments

                        15% Teaching portfolio

80-89               B

70-79               C

Attendance:    Successful progress in a language course requires that students keep up with assigned    material and attend class regularly.  In Spanish 419 you are permitted one absence, excused or unexcused.  For each absence beyond two, two points will be deducted from the final grade point average.  You are expected to be punctual and three tardys (or early departures) count as one absence.  If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out specific assignments from fellow classmates and return prepared to class.
